A block paved driveway is a great investment for any home, but one of the most common frustrations homeowners face is weeds finding their way through the joints. Left unchecked, weeds can work their way into the sand beneath the blocks, causing the surface to shift and creating an untidy appearance.

The good news is that with a little know-how and some straightforward upkeep, you can keep your driveway looking its best for years to come.

Why Do Weeds Grow In Block Paving?

Weeds do not actually grow up from beneath the blocks themselves. In most cases, weed seeds are carried by the wind or birds and settle into the jointing sand between the blocks. Once they take root, they can be surprisingly stubborn to remove, particularly if they are left to spread.

This is why tackling the problem early, and putting the right preventative measures in place, makes a significant difference to how your driveway looks and performs over time.

How To Prevent Weeds In Block Paving

Use Kiln-Dried Sand & Jointing Compounds

One of the most effective ways to reduce weed growth is to use a good quality jointing compound or polymeric sand when your driveway is installed. Unlike standard kiln-dried sand, polymeric sand contains binding agents that harden when wet, making it far more difficult for weed seeds to take hold in the joints.

If your existing driveway has loose or degraded jointing sand, re-sanding the joints and applying a polymeric product can make a noticeable difference to weed resistance going forward.

Apply A Driveway Sealant

Sealing your block paving is another practical step worth considering. A quality sealant applied to the surface helps to bind the jointing sand, making it harder for seeds to penetrate. It also protects the blocks from staining and the effects of weathering, so your driveway retains its colour and finish for longer.

Sealants do need to be reapplied periodically, so it is worth factoring this into your regular maintenance routine.

Keep The Surface Clean

Organic debris such as leaves, soil and moss create the ideal conditions for weed seeds to germinate. Regularly brushing your driveway and removing debris so that it does not sit in the joints for extended periods goes a long way towards keeping weeds at bay.

A pressure washer can also be used to clean the surface and clear out the joints, though it is worth being careful not to dislodge too much of the jointing sand in the process. If you do pressure wash, top up the joints with fresh kiln-dried sand or polymeric sand afterwards.

How To Remove Weeds That Have Already Taken Hold

Pull Them Out by Hand

For isolated weeds, pulling them out by hand is often the quickest solution. To achieve the best results, do this after rainfall when the ground is soft, making sure to remove the root as well as the stem to stop regrowth.

Use A Weed Killer

A path and patio weed killer, applied directly to the affected joints, can be effective for more widespread weed growth. Always follow the product instructions carefully and avoid applying weed killer before heavy rain, as this reduces its effectiveness.

A Flame Weeder

A flame weeder is a useful tool for burning off weeds without introducing chemicals to your driveway. It is particularly effective for larger areas and is widely available from garden centres and hardware stores.
