Sweeping Design With Curved Lawns, Brick Borders & Block Paving Entrance

Ashfield Paving recently completed an impressive gravel driveway installation for a period property in Nottingham.

This substantial project involved creating a large, sweeping driveway design featuring curved lawn areas, protective brick borders, and a striking terracotta block paving entrance that perfectly complements the property's classical character.

The Design Concept

For this Nottingham period property, we created a design that balanced generous parking capacity with aesthetic elegance, incorporating curved lawn areas and decorative borders to achieve a sophisticated, classical appearance.

The driveway features a sweeping layout that flows gracefully across the property's frontage. This generous design provides ample space for multiple vehicles whilst maintaining the open, elegant appearance appropriate for a period home.

Sweeping driveways create a sense of arrival, guiding visitors toward the property in a graceful curve.

A distinctive feature of this installation is the curved lawn areas that overlap the gravel driveway. These green spaces soften the expanse of gravel, breaking up the surface area and creating visual interest through the interplay of different textures and colours.

The curves flow naturally, creating organic shapes that feel intentional and designed.

Where the curved lawns meet the gravel, we installed brick borders to create clear definition.

The Importance Of Brick Borders

The brick borders around the lawn areas are a critical element of this installation, providing both aesthetic and practical benefits.

Without borders, gravel inevitably migrates onto lawn areas through a combination of vehicle movement, foot traffic and weather.

Gravel "kicks up" particularly when vehicles turn or accelerate, scattering stones across adjacent surfaces. Brick borders create a physical barrier that prevents this migration, keeping gravel on the driveway and off the grass.

Borders protect lawn edges from damage caused by vehicles mounting the grass when turning or manoeuvring. The brick borders create a robust edge that withstands vehicle contact, maintaining neat, defined lawn areas that remain healthy and attractive.

Beyond their practical functions, brick borders provide important visual definition, clearly delineating where lawn ends and driveway begins. The contrast between the natural tones of gravel, the green of the lawns, and the warm colours of the brick borders creates visual interest.

The Block Paving Entrance

The entrance to the driveway features terracotta-coloured block paving that creates a striking contrast with the main gravel surface. This bold design choice achieves practical and aesthetic benefits.

Block paving provides superior durability in these high-wear areas compared to gravel alone. At the entrance where vehicles turn into the driveway from the road, gravel can be easily displaced without proper surfacing. Block paving eliminates this problem.

The terracotta block paving creates an impressive entrance statement that immediately signals a quality installation. The warm terracotta colour provides a bold yet classical appearance that suits the period property perfectly. The contrasting surface clearly defines where the driveway begins, creating a threshold effect.

The terracotta colour chosen for the block paving entrance was selected specifically to achieve a bold yet classical appearance appropriate for a period property. Terracotta tones have been used in British architecture for centuries, making it an ideal choice.

Gravel Driveway Installation Process

We began by carefully marking out the driveway design, including the curved lawn areas, border locations and entrance zone. The existing surface was excavated to the required depth, creating space for the sub-base, edge restraints and surfacing materials.

A substantial sub-base was installed throughout the driveway area, providing the solid foundation needed to support vehicles. The brick borders around the curved lawn areas were installed with precision, achieving smooth, flowing curves.

The terracotta block paving entrance was laid to professional standards, with proper attention to pattern, alignment and compaction. With borders and entrance complete, we installed the gravel surface throughout the main driveway area.
